Passing of Joe Breedon

Retired Lt. Col Joseph H. Breedon
passed away peacefully August 6, 2008.
Joseph (Joe) was born in Greensboro, NC on July
8, 1927, to the late Frederick L. Breedon and the
late Estelle T. Breedon. Joe attended Greensboro
Senior High School, graduating in 1947. He
continued his education at Guilford College where
he met his future bride, Joan M. Brookings. He
entered the United States Marine Corps in 1951
and was discharged, at the “Convenience of the
Government” in 1952 to enter the United States
Air Force Aviation Cadet program. Shortly after
graduation from pilot training he and Joan were
married and spent the next 23 years assigned to
various fighter squadrons around the world. Joe
received numerous commendations throughout his career.
Joe and Joan had five children and
lived in Shalimar, Florida since 1971. They were
married 53 years. Joe came from a large family
and enjoyed a houseful of family and friends
celebrating life. He enjoyed singing barbershop
harmony and playing tennis and golf. He was a
charter member of the Ft. Walton Beach Barbershop
Chapter and sang for years in a popular quartet
called the “Harbor Knights.” He was inducted
into the Hall of Fame of the Sunshine District in
the Barbershop Harmony Society. He was an active
member of the Shalimar United Methodist Church
and sang in the chancellor choir and the “Gloryland” ensemble.
His wife, Joan B. Breedon; and his
parents, Fred and Estelle Breedon, preceded him in death.
Joe is survived by his five children
and their spouses: Joseph, Jr. (Patricia)
Breedon, Joanne Breedon, Kathy (Gordon) Robinson,
Robert Breedon, Tyree (Lee) Cunningham; twelve
grandchildren, Jennie, Evie, Julie Breedon;
Rachel, Mariah, Josiah, Judah Robinson, and
Rebecca, Joseph, Jonathan, Grace, and Benjamin
Cunningham, a brother Fred (Patricia) and sisters
Sarah Davidson and Rebecca (Jack) Bullard.
The family will receive friends from 6
to 8 PM Friday, August 8th, at the Emerald Coast
Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road N.E., Ft. Walton
Beach. A graveside service with military honors
will be held at 1 PM on August 9th at Beal
Memorial Cemetery, followed by a “Celebration of
Life” 2 PM at the Family Life Center at Shalimar
United Methodist Church, 1 Old Ferry Road, Shalimar, FL.
